When reading the chapters, I was confused on why Huck and Tom needed to use a sheet? Did they use it to try to confuse Aunt Sally? Also, why are they trying to smuggle tools into Jim's cabin? Won't the people who have to take him food realize that he has tools in his cabin? Why does Tom want Jim to carve things into the walls? Wouldn't that be real noticeable? Did Huck and Tom put the rats into Jim's cabin so that they would run into the house when the doors opened to feet Jim? Why did Tom write a letter to the Phelps that they were stealing Jim? That doesn't make any sense to me at all.
In chapters 38-40 Huck and Tom come up with the plan to get Jim out of the cabin and not be a prisoner. It took Huck and Tom three weeks to finish the plan and make the escape successful and free Jim from the cabin. Huck and Tom sneak all the these tins pots and pans into the cabin to make a distraction. To me, Tom was the one who kept coming up with the distractions to help free Jim from the cabin. Tom wanted Jim to engrave things into the walls but found out that the walls were wood so Tom came up with the idea that they decided that they should roll a gridstone into the cabin.
In these chapters I really liked how hard Huck and Tom worked to get Jim out of "prison". It shows true friendship. However, I did not like how Tom turned down almost every single idea Huck had come up with. Huck was trying to come up with all these ideas to free Jim but it seemed as if Tom didn't want to help Huck anymore because he just turned down ideas. I think that it was going to be Tom's way of doing things or Tom was not going to help Huck with freeing Jim. I find it interesting that that Huck and Tom wanted to make it look like a real dungeon for Jim. I also think that it is weird that catch all of these rats and spiders and other creatures to put in Jim's cabin.
